  • New Paint Finally Finished - Spray Can

Hey I have not posted on here much, but I recently finished painting my bike so I figured I would post some pics. I have a 99 Katana.

Here it is the first day I got it next to my old bike a GS700E. It was missing some plastic and scratched up from the previous owner crashing into a corn field

The first thing to change was the tail. I also added a Krazy Kreations undertail. So much better looking.

And a custom third brake light made out of the grab bar. I drilled holes for leds in it and cut a slot on the underside to run the wiring. Then used epoxy to fill the slot. Hopefully the leds will last a long time.

Here it is once I got it back together for the first time and then rode it this way for about a year and a half.

Now for the paint! I used Arizona Beige Krylon truck and van paint and Bronze wheel paint for the wheels and undertail. The graphics were custom made by a local sign shop. The paint took about two months to complete everything due to preping to get the plastics perfectly smooth. All the plastics have atleast 3 coats of primer sealer, 3 coats of paint, and 3 coats of clear to make them as nice as possible. I also used rubbing compound which really made the paint look great. While it was apart I also repainted the swingarm, triple tree, and engine covers a bright metallic silver to brighten up the bike.

Thanks for looking, sorry for the long post

Looks really good man, I do like the grab rail brake light, nice touch.
However I can't stop thinking what it would look like if the rear indicators were done in the same way. Could you please post some more info on how you did the grab rail brake lights?

Oh and I'd definitely change the front indicators for some clear ones....

      Thanks

Looks fantastic! I especially like the color of the wheels....compliments the bike paint perfectly. Nice idea on the grab bar as well.....may have been done before but this is the first time I've seen it done.

                Thanks eveyone for the compliments.

Tokalosh - I wish I would have taken pics of when the groove was cut in the bottom so I could show you easier. For the holes I just made up a jig for the drill press to carefully drill into the bar. After I got the holes drilled all to the same depth I then took a cut off wheel and cut an approimately 1/8" wide by .25 deep groove from the bottom center out to where you can see the wires exit. The tricky part was the wiring. I had to slide all the leds in the holes, then solder them together in series with one another. I then filled the groove with epoxing to cover all the wiring so that it would not short out. Thin wire was run and covered with expoxy through the cut groove to the point where it exits. A resistor was also required so that the leds would not burn out when put to 12v. I then wired it into my brake lights so that it is on dim constantly and is brighter when you hit the brakes. I will photoshop a drawing of how the groove was cut to make this easier to visualize. Hope this helps somewhat.
