  • Another Rattle Can Question

I was thinking about painting my bike this winter and i noticed alot of spray paint already has gloss could these be used a base? I was thinking fusion plastic paint gloss black and duplicolor engine paint hugger orange or lime green would i have to clear the black since its already gloss and the engine paint says it resists gas n oil It will never be a show bike but i just want my bike to be a nice and somewhat shiny not like a old beat up machine

I used fusion as the base on my bike and Krylon triple thick clear as the clear coat. On the gas tank I used a very close red for the base it was the rustoleum and used rustoleum clear on as the clear. I have spilled gas on my tank a few times and wiped it right off with no loss of paint. However if gas gets on the Krylon stuff DO NOT wipe it off let it evaporate then clean up what you can. If it runs down the fairing the paint will bubble but again dont wipe it off deal with the bubble or you will have to repaint that part. The duplicolor paints are great for plastics as well you can get them at checker and autozone. they are a little more but look so much better.

Just curious....are you looking at rattle-canning because it's easy or because it's cheap?

if it's simply a money issue, check out Paintforcars.com. They only sell stuff by the gallon (way too much for a bike), but prices start around $40. The only downside is you have to pay shipping....which can be a little pricey sometimes.

It won't be the greatest stuff in the world, but it's probably better and more durable than most any rattle can you'd buy off the shelf. All you need is an air compressor, a $20 paint gun from harbor freight, and the will to experiment a little.

I've painted several bikes now with "near" professional level results, and i'm no professional. But all my rattle can jobs look like rattlecan jobs. It's not hard to tell the difference.

Painted my bike with Krylon Fusion then clear coated it with Spraymax 2K.

          Turned out AWESOME ~

Couldn't agree more. You can paint your bike for around $100 using Nason which is a good paint.

If you're going to use rattle cans then at least equip yourself with one of those pistol grip things that clamp on to the top of the can. The quality of the job will go way up!

Yes paint that has gloss in it can be used as a base. It probably won't be sealed though and will still need a top coat.

I've had good and bad results with fusion. It's an incredible pain to sand when it reacts with something below it, and some of the clears I've used "eat" it. The adhesion promoters built into the fusion paint mean that you can't spray it on quite as heavy, and need more time between coats. IMO you're better off going with an adhesion promoter (Bullfrog, etc) and a quality paint like SEM. You can also get spray cans that have compressed air and a glass container. These can be used to spray custom auto quality paints.
Some people are primarily positive, others negative. Some argue about whether the glass is half full or half empty. Me? I drink the contents and call it empty.

the fusion I used was a gloss that is the only way I could get the color I needed.

I did a rattle can job on my tank and it turned out great (probably not noticable to someone that didnt know it was done with rattle can) But to make it look nice with rattle, just like with any other paint job, you have to put in the time and work.

                      I first removed the tank,
                      sanded to bare metal,
applied 2 coats of primer, then wet sanded with 800 sand paper,
applied an other coat of primer, then wet sanded again,
one more coat of the primer following a wet sand with 1200 sand paper
applied my first coat of color (gloss black), then wet sanded with the 1200 sandpaper
applied 3 more coats of color with a wet sand inbetween coats,
then put final coat of color on,
let dry for 24 hrs, then used rubbing compound on the finish.
