  • Tachometer irratic

I have an '89 KAT 750. The Tachometer on occasion does not operate at all and sometimes bounces all over the range with no regard to real engine RPM. This has happened at speed and while sitting still. Most times it works perfectly. Has anyone had this happen? Is it a common problem? Any sugestions were to start to troubleshoot? The bike runs perfectly otherwise and is a real blast for an old timer.

check connections, wires after 17 years can get loose and such

I have an 89 with no problems with the tach, but I've tracked down several electrical problems that were due to wiring getting loose, frayed or decroded

I'd start with the molex (multi-pin) plug connectors at the rear of the tach and any connected to that. Electrical spray cleaner and dielectric grease are your friend...

      Good Luck!

        Thanks,
I'll check all of the electrical connections for corrosion. I plan on removing the bodywork to replace the clutch this winter anyway.
