  • ok all pre98 kats listen up

ok for all you guys wanting to upgrade the rear tire size to a fatter tire here a solution to the problem a you can get the 88 89 gixxer wheel and the brake rotor and caliper bracket and do a lil modding to make it fit which will give you a 4.5 inch rear rim. or and easier method i just found find a bandit 400 rear wheel its 4.0 inch but uses the same stock kat rotor and cushdrive the brake caliper is the same the only thing that needs modded is the brake arm which can be move to the outside face of the brake caliper mount and the arm mount on the swing arm ill post pics later. but using the 160 60 17 on a 3.5 inch rim will work ive personally done it on my gs500 it uses the same rear wheel as a kat. i took it on the track cornering at high speeds around 80 to 100 no problems it mushrooms it a lil so it turns a 160 into more like a 155 but with a bandit 400 4.0 inch wheel you can use the 160 60 17 tire with no mushroom and utillize the whole tire now so start looking for bandit 400 wheels ive got one more hiding in my garage right now

i thought the 98+ rear rim was 4.5, and it was a direct swap for me (with the brake rotor off a 98 plus anyway)

are these wheels going for a lot cheaper or someting?

"the only thing that needs modded is the brake arm which can be move to the outside face of the brake caliper mount"
Also, I don't know the loads put on this arm but wouldn't this make the arm mounted in single shear fashion? I remember it being mounted in double, but my bike is a ways away so I may be wrong. Thoughts on this woudl be welcome, hate to see anyone get hurt by this breaking.

pics would be cool either way, more options is always a good thing

Ty, to answer that, they are easier to come by for the most part. I have been searching ebay and posted here for a 98+ wheel with no prevail.

Does the Bandit wheel have swept spokes like the pre98's? I know the 89 Gix1100 wheel does because I tried one a while back. To do that wheel you need to add Katana bearings and use the cush drive/sprocket and brake rotor from the GSXR to make it work.

The 98+ is a direct bolt in and requires ONLY the wheel and rotor. You use your pre98 cush/sprocket and spacers. No brake arm mod required and a 160 fits with room left over. Not much but it fits.

I don't know about the bandit wheel because I've not messed with it but if you say it is only 4" then there is no need to do anything with the brake arm. The only way you will need to modify the brake arm is if you go wider than 4.5" (GSXR and 98+ are both 4.5" and require no brake arm mods).

Also I want to mention here that yes you can put a 160 on a 3.5" rim but that does not mean you should. It is not a very safe thing to do and is a waste. You will never use it all and the pressures you put on the tire forced on to that rim could lead to disaster.

Yeah, I just typed in "Katana Wheel" and they came up. I figured I'd throw them in to but $199 is a bit steep. The rest of them are reasonable though. That one or the $1 buy now for $65 are both pretty good.

That GSXR wheel complete with cush is really calling my name though...... muddles off to check bank account.

I don't spend much time searching ebay. Most of my free time is spent on KR, go figure

I will be searching ebay more within the next couple of months. I have a couple of projects I want to do over the winter.

I might just have to jump on that wheel Jim. What did you do with that other wheel you had? Anyway I will be watching that GSXR wheel on ebay.

I got disgusted with myself after I sold the cush drive without realizing I needed it and I was out of time to get tires on before the rally. I just hung on to the bearings and sold the wheel too and will get another when I'm ready. I'm running a 98+ right now until it's time to change tires again and then I'll change for the GSXR so go for it. I've got a pipe I'm keeping an eye on that takes priority over another wheel anyway. Looks like you'll need a sprocket to match your chain and a set of bearings but other than that it's all there.
