  • Heads Up: ABS is coming to a bike near you

    Honda has announced that it will have ABS as stock or as an option on virtually every one of it's motorcycles by the 2006 model year, and pre-installed stock by the 2008 model year. The other Japanese manufacturers will be following suite, and by 2008, virtually every new Japanese bike on the market is expected to have ABS as a standard feature or at minimum, as an option. The three basic reasons are:
    (A) The prices for the hardware have dropped far enough to make it commercially feasible without significant price-bump on the existing bikes (expect a $100 - $150 premium at first for ABS);
    (B) The accident rates will drastically reduce as most wipe-outs due to loss of front wheel control under breaking in bad stuff will be greatly reduced, thus reducing insurance costs for the industry as a whole; AND
    (C) Testing has shown that even experienced racers (and all newbies) tend to stop faster with ABS than without because it removes the consideration of front-wheel lock-up when applying maximum front brake pressure.

    No word yet on whether the industry will also make it standard for rear brakes.

    Cheers

    hands down a wonderful engineering idea. i would love to see it and it'd be nice to have, but would probably freak me out the first time if it ever came into effect while i was riding.
    if its got 2 wheels or a skirt....i'll ride it.

          They've had the abs as on option on the VFR for years, not surprising they took it to the next step this coming year.

            Duff, we have to get used to the computery stuff. lol
            It is the only way to make better machines and it is better technology.

            I knew that ABS would finally make it to motorcycles.

              They've already started offering it for many "standard" models in the UK for this year as an option (including the CBF500, CBF600, etc).

                  Or mod kits to over-ride 'em, or a toggle switch to kill them... Hey, I know what I'll be selling in five years

                        You think ABS was a problem for cagers to get used to what do you think Yuppie bikers are going to do.

                          Do you think they'll be able to retrofit ABS to older bikes?

                            I think it would be possible, but not cost effective unless ABS was an option for that bike at one time.

                              I know a lot of racers who love ABS cause they can go deeper in the straights (unless they're good at threshold braking)...so maybe this will advance motorcycle racing as well.
