Hello There!

Would like to introduce myself to the members of this cool Board! Im a new Rider from NY (Orange County to be specific) and just bought my first bike.
My search lasted for months... I looked at all sorts of motorcycles all the way from Ninja's to Buell's.
I couldn't find the right bike for a long time, it would either be out of my price range or I would suddenly read something about it and dislike it.
I wanted to get a Ninja but the gearbox clunks kind of scared me off and at the time I couldn't find any at the right price.
I've looked at CBR's however the harshness of those bikes made me think ahead.
I looked into getting a Yamaha's YZF but just couldn't find one  so My search went on...
I initially wanted a GS 500 as my first bike however the lack of go on the freeway made me wonder how long I would actually keep it for

Anyway... to the point.

I didn't know at first that Such bike as Katana existed until I saw one on local Craigs-list.
It was a 1993 Red Katana, very clean but with 40k on it. The price was alrite... but I didn't go for it.
The Katana attracted me because of its design as a sports bike however it was with a spice of cruiser.
Perfect combination of Comfort, Speed, Reliability and Agility... I just knew it was the perfect bike!
Month goes by and I see this 99 Katana beeing reposted for a bit out of budget, I said "WTH" and went for it.
Called the guy and scheduled a 'seeing'. Couple days later after about an hour of negotiations I had the title for this Beaut ;)

Some Quick Info:

1999 600 (Most of you could prob tell anyway)

Got it with 7300 Miles on the clock for 2100 bucks.

There is some damage on the Right side Fairing, Blinker and the Engine cover (common Kat scratch spots)

Gen 1 Imprezas Rock.. I'd trade my wife for a 2.5RS..
(Actually I'd trade her for a Justy)
Are you still running the E22 NA?
I'm about to trade my 98 OBS for a WRX..
I'm going to miss that nose..

Hey I was wondering; has anyone ever set the grill back into the nose?
I saw a Mach 1 Mustang do it like 20 years ago, it was subtle but impressive.

Yea, I was inspired by 90's WRC. I used to watch it all back in Russia. Now'a days WRC is not the same unfortunately. :(
Well my car is a Frankenstein... I bought it 1.8L FWD Auto but I swapped it to 2.2 from 1995 Impreza, 5 spd trans from 2000 RS and the whole AWD conversion from a 99 OUTBACK. So yes, the 2.2 is still NA but I doubt for long. I've been planning to go Turbo or EG33 for a while now.

I honestly don't understand the question about the nose... can you explain please?! 8-[

Well I was thinking if you took the black grill section and remounted it closer to the engine (I have never looked to see if there is room)
It might make the nose look more aggressive..
I just looked up the part, its part of the trim, never knew that.. Never mind

I think I'd be looking for excuses to talk to her more than once in a while! Maybe take her with you on your next ride...

As for the aches and pains, straighten your back, squeeze the tank with your knees, relax your shoulders and take some of the weight off your hands. That and get a Corbin.

I'd love to see her actually but the problem is that she is 10k miles away :smt012

*Whats a Corbin?* (Nevermind, did my search... is that seat really that great??? is it worth 300+ $$$??? )

Well... 10k miles is a pretty long way to go for a bike ride.

The Corbins really are that good but watch e-bay for a used one. You should be able to find one for $150 or so. Lower cost option is to rebuild your seat with some denser foam and maybe a gel insert but I think that once you've bought the material and factored in your time you're better off with a used Corbin.

Yeahh... about what..? 20 day ride? IFFF I can ride 500 miles a day on a Katana. 70 miles and Im dying on that seat :smt011 But yea, that girl is very cute with beautiful voice and just gorgeous! Anyway... don't wanna make you drool on Russian chicks :D

The seat... well... Im in a situation where money is a big obstacle atm :smt012 Got bills and owe some money. Plus, the mixed reviews I've read about them. Thanks for the input! ;) Anyway, you guys don't need to hear my problems... Im not here for that :bigthumb Ill try the stock seat, who knows maybe Ill get used to it?! :pray

There are gel pads available out there that strap onto your seat or you could try wearing bicycle shorts under your riding pants.

Another thing you can try is scooting forward towards the tank. It works and it also takes some weight off your hands.

Shoot me some pix, and a price.
Where's Regina SK?

Here this is the thread that I found out about them from

http://katriders.com/vb/showthread.php?t=115464

I started to try to install the left side and did like he did in his thread and ground out a little bit of the bracket (which you will also probably have to do because of the sloppy welds on katana frames) but couldn't even get my original bolt out of my bike lol. I live in canada and get get a shipping quote if you want. I think it was like $30 shipping to get it here from the states. I would sell them to you for like $40? Is that ok?? Its like half price (I have no idea what shipping would have been in the states).

This is what he says in his thread about the fit - - - -

NOTE: this is where I found a problem. Suzuki welds were sloppy on the frame
area, and I had to relieve the inner portion of the bracket to clear the weld, using a
Dremel with a grinding wheel.
First use a rubber hammer to find where it interferes (the frame will mark the powder
coat), and then relieve that portion of the bracket with the Dremel.
This is easy, and took approximately 3 minutes or so.(I had to repeat the procedure
on the left side as well, but only lightly.

Well Ill need to think a little, Im a bit tight with the finances and if it'll end up being near 100 bucks after shipping then its just lacking the logic. However if its not too hard to get a quote to 10950 (NY USA) then that would be great. It's always better to deal with an exact amount. ;)

I was the photographer except the pictures where Im on my bike obviously... :)

The run took place around East NY/ Connecticut through Lime Rock Park and into Catskills. We had about 20 bikes and did 270 miles from 9 am to 6 pm. Had alot of stops due to the lady co-riders on board and I think that's why I wasn't hurting that bad.

Cheers!

Havent posted here in a long time. Comp was down, went on vacation to Cali and been working 3 jobs. The weather sucked lately so the bike rides are a rare event :(

Welcome.

Good to see somebody from my orig. area O.o.

I'm from the Hudson Valley too - not OC, though, SC, small *** town called Yulan in another small *** town called Highland - about 1h10m from Middletown. Though now I'm in Rochester NY, so I can't offer to go riding with ya :(.

270 miles is pretty damn nice if you're just starting, man, good job. That's the longest I've ridden my Kat in one day (Rochester to the Hudson Valley :-P), took about 6 or 7 hours, which is very slow when you think about it, but meh.

My current baby is an '04 R1...and I honestly can't imagine doing 270 miles on it - the seat is comfortable..not 270 mile comfortable, lol. At least the Kat had a center stand and luggage tie-downs. Definitely going to miss the bike - my '97 Kat-750 has to get sold soon :(. Enjoy your stay here, and enjoy your Kat. I'm definitely broken about moving to an R1, I <3 my Kat - there will always be a place in my heart for it!! They're great bikes.

Hey, thanks!!!

I love R1's and was actually looking into getting one of them, however like you said... they are not trip bikes. Nice for an evening ripp but not for distance cruising. :smt012 270 miles wasn't too bad, I did a 70 mile practice ride a couple days prior to my trip around Bear Mnt and along the Hudson River. Had some *** rapage and my shoulders got tired but, after that it was good! On the trip we had like 20 bikes, and it took us about 10 hours with multiple stops. It was deff a great starting experience and I would love to do it again however the weather we've been having lately does not allow such pleasure... [-(

Thinking about Getting a Legacy GT next year or a Yamaha JZR :redcool

Yeah, and trying to get me and my g/f both comfortable on the R1 was a ****ing joke and a half, even for a 30 minute ride. Once I settle down a bit and get a house with a garage for my bikes and a bike lift (yeah, I dream big :-P) I'm going to get a second bike (that I can actually keep) which will be more of a trip bike, like maybe a fuel injected Kat or something of the sort...or I may go uber cruiser and get like a Virago 700 or something and be able to ride forever, lol. Though right now, in college, got to work with what I got - and the R1 doesn't work well for both of us - that rear seat is kind of just for decoration or a short trip.

I'm definitely going to miss my Kat when I sell it, but I definitely got to sell it. It'll always hold a place in my heart, though, and I'll probably get a post kat somewhere down the road, lol, but for now, it's sell the Kat, keep the R1, and then wait :(.

EDIT:
The 70 mile trip was a good idea, before I went on my 270mi trip the furthest I ever did on a bike was like 30 miles (didn't have anybody to ride with), the 270 mile trip kicked the **** out of me, haha.

Hah Who knows? Perhaps. They are great looking bikes but I wish it was more comfortable. The girlfriend doesnt like it either, it scares her. She thinks its a crouch rocket.

WTF?! Bone stock, the 1100 is pretty cush. Try sitting on one with a Corbin. You want any more comfortable than that you're looking at a Goldwing.

Bike looks good. I sold my Kat beginning of this season. Chain ****ed the engine case on my R1 February of this year. So I ran out of bikes.

I then bought a '82 CM450E and loved the **** out of it for about a month, then I ran into carb problems and its been out of comission for the last 2 months or so until I get the carbs back on it :(. I want to do a long trip on it once i get it working, I feel like it will make a nice long distance bike.
